President Trump ramped up his assaults on U.S. Rep. Ilhan Omar on Friday, stating he was “dissatisfied that a congresswoman could hate our nation.”

He also said the people at the North Carolina rally, many of whom chanted “Send her back” while Trump paused, are “incredible people” and “incredible patriots”.

However, on Thursday, by playing down the chants from the crowd, President Trump tried to be politically correct, saying he wasn’t “pleased” with the chant and disagreed. But for too long he could not behave against his nature.

His remarks came just days after Omar and three other minority congresswomen– Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Rashida Tlaib and Ayanna Pressley – were assaulted in a sequence of tweets in which he told the four females to go back to where they originated from. All four are citizens of the United States, and all but Omar was born in the United States. Omar went as a Somali refugee to the nation at the age of 12.

After the tweets, the Democratic-controlled House of Representatives condemned Trump’s “racist comments that have legitimised and increased fear and hatred of new Americans and people of colour”.

Trump maintains his comments were “not racist”. He said that those who are not happy in the US can leave.
