Congresswoman Ocasio-Cortez has certainly made waves during the 2018 midterms since her landslide election. Now several individuals have entered the Republican ticket in hopes of unseating the progressive Democrat in 2020, including an African American businessman.
A 38 black businesswoman, Scherie Murray, announced on Wednesday through twitter her candidacy for the 2020 Congressional Election. Murray accused the present congresswoman of pursuing “celebrity and advertising” rather than helping her constituents.
“There’s a crisis in Queens and it’s called AOC,” she wrote in a tweet. “She isn’t worried about us, she’s worried about being famous. That’s why I’m running for Congress. Join our movement to #unitethefight.”
Murray is an immigrant from Jamaica, she migrated when she was a child and she went on to claim that unlike Ocasio-Cortez, she had experience bridging the gap “between constituents in our community and the elected officials that represent them, between different nationalities and races, and between political parties.”
This is not Murray’s first time throwing her hat into the political ring, according to USA Today. She ran for the New York Assembly unsuccessfully in 2015, losing 85% of the vote. She also lost in 2013 when she ran for the New York City Council with a comparable margin.
Murray is one of four Republicans to run against Ocasio-Cortez, who won 78% of the 2018 vote. The GOP will definitely face upward fight in the strongly Democratic 14th Congressional District of New York, which encompasses sections of the Bronx and Queens districts of New York. House representatives are appointed for terms of two years.
