Somali-American representative of the fifth congressional district of Minnesota, Ilhan Omar. In a short time, for all the incorrect reasons, she has become one of the country’s most cited and debated Democratic officials.
Omar tweeted back in 2012, before being elected to the legislature of the state or Congress, “Israel has hypnotized the world, may Allah awaken the people and help them see the evil doings of Israel.”
In an interview on CNN January 17, when asked about this, Omar responded, “I don’t understand how my remarks would be offensive to Jewish Americans.”
Just recently she tweeted that she realized only now why she could be offensive in her declaration. “Frankly, I learned from Jewish organisations after my CNN interview that my use of the term ‘ hypnotize’ and the hideous feeling it holds was offensive,”
“It’s clear to me now that I’ve spent a lot of energy placing my 2012 tweet in context and little energy disavowing the anti-Semitic trope that I unknowingly used, which is sad and offensive.”
