According to numerous reports, Omar has been arrested and has faced various accusations of corruption during her short time in politics.
A police report of last year’s Alpha News uncovered by Christine Bauman showed that Omar was detained in 2013. The congresswoman was detained when former Somali President Hassan Sheik Mohamed gave a speech there for causing a disruption near the Minneapolis Convention Center.
The Somali president was scheduled to stay at the nearby Hotel Ivy, and Omar was among a large group of Somali protesters who stormed the hotel after the event. When asked to disperse, many of the protesters left, but Omar caused a scene and made a stand against the officers who were attempting to clear the area.
According to the police report, “As she stood her ground and refused to leave I took hold of her left elbow to escort her from the lobby. Omar then pulled away from me stating, ‘Don’t put your hands on me!’ Others in her group complied and began walking toward the front entry/exit door as I ordered and I managed to coax Omar out with them.”
In her mugshot, Omar can be seen smiling, and this is probably an arrest she’s proud of and wouldn’t attempt to conceal, as protest and activism are seen as a heroic act on the left. However, she has had to face some far more severe legal problems, even more lately than her outburst at the Ivy Hotel.
